  4. Intergenerational Programs & Spaces The Pillars Child Care
Our intergenerational child care philosophy is learning through play and exploration. We offer a unique program that brings multiple generations together in a stimulating environment. As children and older adults share memories, play games and create together an unmistakable bond forms that transcends generations. For children who do not live near their own grandparents, these connections can be especially poignant and meaningful. They’ll understand more about life and discover many similarities between themselves and their “Grand-friends”. This understanding and love will lay a foundation for celebrating diversity, a skill that they will use throughout their lives. Our program has been designed to give daily opportunities to interact and build friendships through our staff-supervised activities such as; read-a-long time, gardening, bingo, lifelong learning music program, walks around our senior campus, inclusion in the weekly programs for entertainment and special meals together. 8. Alive Together
Alive Together is a virtual program that harnesses online technologies to provide social-emotional support networks and a sense of belonging as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We invite intergenerational student volunteers to connect with isolated older adults by leveraging creative arts therapy techniques as a tool for increased human connection and well-being. Additionally, Alive Together supports young students by providing service-learning opportunities and beneficial intergenerational connections. Many of the young volunteers gain insight about themselves and the community by engaging with our programs. The curriculum is designed to be a 6-week evidence-based program meant to enhance connection and decrease isolation. Each session is dedicated to a different theme and discussion around topics of belonging, empathy, aging, and creative expression. This program is designed to shift negative cultural perceptions on aging, provide tools and knowledge for volunteers on effective communication (especially with older adults), and increase emotional/creative expression that promotes healthy aging for all.
