More than 2.6 million children across the country are raised in “grand families” by their grandparents or other relatives without their parents in the home. Studies have shown that children raised in relative/kinship foster care have better outcomes than children in foster care with non-relatives. Yet grandparents and other relatives raising children are less likely to receive supports and services, including those provided by professionals trained in helping children who have experienced trauma. In this workshop, faculty will provide information and strategies to improve access to services for grand families. Participants also will learn how to advocate for culturally appropriate services for grand families raising children who have experienced trauma, including those in American Indian families.
